Baseball Returns with Green and Gold World Series

11/6/2020 9:30:00 AM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University baseball returns to game action for the first time since the season was cut short in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and face the prospect of both a familiar and unfamiliar opponent this weekend.

The Green and Gold World Series, the annual intrasquad scrimmage that marks the end of fall practice is set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. While the team is competing against itself, the large number of newcomers seeing action in a JU uniform for the first time is one of the main storylines entering series.

"We are so thankful to be able to finish fall practice season with our annual Green and Gold series," said Head Coach Chris Hayes. "After months of ambiguity, disruption and frustration due to the pandemic, getting out on the field to practice has been extremely rewarding. Additionally, what a huge accomplishment for our team to be able to practice the entire fall without a single disruption or hesitation in our schedule.

"Our guys did a great job of listening to the messages sent from President Cost and the JU administration regarding behavior and protocol this fall at JU."

Four of the team's veterans were chosen to lead the festivities as team captains and coaches. Redshirt-seniors Dakota Julylia and Jagger McCoy head up the Gold team, while redshirt-seniors Tyler Santana and Cory Heffron are leading the Green squad.

The series is set to play three seven inning games, starting on Friday evening at 6:05 p.m. Game two is scheduled for Saturday at 6:05 p.m. and game three is set for a 12:05 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.

"Everyone within the JU community deserves credit while we continue to navigate these unprecedented times," said Hayes. "What a tremendous way to celebrate all that these young men have accomplished this fall.

"I am very excited to watch some competitive baseball this weekend!"

Per University policy, fans are not permitted at athletic venues for events taking place through the end of 2020. The policy will be reassessed in the spring. We appreciate your continued patience and support as we look to maintain a self and healthy environment for our student-athletes, coaches and staff.

All three games will air on the Jacksonville Dolphins Sports Network, which can be accessed through MIXLR and the MIXLR app.
