A Well-Rounded Bellarmine Team Shuts Down Dolphins

Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Jacksonville's women's soccer team(5-6-2, 0-4-0 ASUN) suffered its third consecutive (3-4-5, 1-0-0 ASUN) conference loss, this time on the road against Bellarmine. The Knights' well-rounded performance made it difficult for JU to take control and ended with a 2-0 loss. While the contest was originally scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. start time, an unexpected weather delay pushed the competition back until 12:45 p.m.

Bellarmine's offense was solid from kickoff. The Knights took its first shot attempt in just under two minutes of play, which would ultimately be saved by Dolphins goalkeeper Courtney Green. At the three minute mark, Bellarmine attempted to score once again but was unsuccessful in finding an open spot in the goal. Through the first 10 minutes of play, the Knights defense would come into full force as the Dolphins were unable to achieve a shot attempt. At the 11 minute mark, the Knights pursued back-to-back shot attempts, and the second shot by Sarah Buse would launch over the goalkeeper to give Bellarmine a 1-0 lead.

As the Dolphins continued to struggle on offense, the Knights took advantage of a foul in the box that would lead to a penalty kick at the 25 minute mark. Bellarmin's Buse converted the penalty kick into the Knight's second goal of the game to extend the lead. Just under 10 minutes later, Selma Fohrer managed to attempt the Dolphins first shot of the game but the ball would land right into the hands of Bellarmine's goalkeeper. Following Fohrer's lead, Shelby Brim seeked an attempt to put JU on the board, but was also unable to do so. The half ended with the Knights ahead after showing a well-rounded performance on both sides of the field.

Jacksonville returned to the field stronger than before. Beyonce Robinson and Kaya Williams attempted back-to-back shots starting at the 46 minute mark, but the ball would be saved and blocked by the Knights. However, the Knights would work through the first 10 minutes without being able to rattle off any shot attempts as the Dolphins defense began to kick into full gear.

During the next 15 minutes of play, the Knights returned to its original form by demonstrating its power on offense. At the 55 mark, Bellarmine achieved its first shot of the half, followed by five more shots over an 11 minute time frame in hopes to change the number on the scoreboard. Across the next 20 minutes of the half, Bellarmine took one last shot attempt four minutes before the final whistle blew.

Up next, the Dolphins return to Southern Oak Stadium for its homecoming game on Thursday, Oct. 7. The contest is against ASUN opponent Liberty (7-4-1, 2-1-0 ASUN), and kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
