SEATTLE - Jacksonville Women's Rowing is taking to the waters of Head Of The Lake Regatta this weekend, where they will be competing against a grouping of schools from the Pacific Northwest that includes Washington, Oregon, and Gonzaga.
The team will have great views of the Seattle skyline and the Space Needle on the course. As racers follow the eastern shore of Lake Union and past the Pocock Rowing Center, boats will pass under the University Bridge and continue east through Portage Bay. Fans can get a panoramic view from the southern point of the Washington Arboretum as rowers pass Fox Point, head east towards Lake Washington, and around a buoyed 3-point turn before finishing northwest towards Husky Stadium and the Conibear Shellhouse.
When asked about the upcoming weekend, Head Coach
Mike Lane said, "I am FIRED UP to share my hometown with my athletes! This is my first time in my 25 years of coaching that I have had the opportunity to take my team to my hometown for a race! Although I am sure it will be cold and rainy, we will for sure have the full Seattle experience."
Coach Lane continued on to say, "As a high school athlete I raced at the Head of the Lake, which is the premier fall head race on the west coast. We will get to race against a bunch of smaller northwest colleges. It will be great competition, as well as competition we have never seen before. It is going to be a blast! My goals for our boat this weekend is to leave it all on the course, work on the fundamentals and have a great racing experience."
The Champ Women's 8+ race is at 11:07 a.m. on Sunday.
