SEATTLE – Jacksonville University women's rowing finished fifth in the Varsity 8+ Champ race on Sunday morning at the Head of the Lake Regatta.
The Dolphins posted a time of 19:13.468 and bested boats from Portland, Seattle Pacific, Seattle, Puget Sound and Oregon in. the premier fall regatta in the Pacific Northwest.
"Although the weather was a very Seattle day with rain and cold, our women had no complaints, went out and executed a good race plan and had a solid result!" said Head Coach
Mike Lane.
JU battled cold and blustery conditions during the race, which started at 8:07 a.m. local time and finished over 17 seconds of the next closest competitor.
It was the program's first trip to the regatta, which started in 1979 and has steadily grown every since. It was a special experience for Coach Lane, who hails from the area.
"This trip was not just about the results, it was about experiencing rowing on the west coast, as well racing crews we generally never see in our spring season," he commented after the race. "The experience we gained is unmeasurable and I am fired up to watch how they use this as motivation throughout the winter."
The team returns to the southeast to conclude its fall season on Saturday at the Head of the South Regatta in Augusta, Ga.
