FAIRFAX STATION, VA – Jacksonville Men's Rowing gets back to racing this weekend when they head to Northern Virginia to compete in the Occoquan River Invitational on Sunday.
Coming off of what will be close to a three week break from competition, the Dolphins look to build upon their times from their previous match against Florida Tech on March 26.
In that match, JU set a quick pace in the Varsity 8+ posting a time of 5:47 which was six seconds quicker than the boat from Florida Tech. The Dolphins were also able to post solid times in the Varsity 4 and Pair race with times of 7:03 and 7:35 respectively.
Looking forward to this Sunday the Dolphins are set to face off against a grouping of high-level opponents that includes Georgetown, Marietta College, Drexel, Holy Cross, Saint Joseph's, and Navy. The regatta will be run in duels with the winners of the morning's races advancing to face each other in the afternoon slate of races.
When asked about how he felt about Sunday's event, Head Coach
Preston Weinard was eager to see how his boats stacked up against some very fast opponents, while also keeping next weekend's SIRA Regatta in focus.
"These upcoming two weeks have been anticipated for months, and we are ready to race at a very high level over two weekends. The team has trained hard and have made improvements since our race against Florida Tech. Right now, our focus is on the Occoquan. I am excited to see how we stack up against several ranked opponents at the Occoquan. With two chances to race, we will work on strategies and sharpen our race plans for the following weekend at SIRA," said Weinard.
Weinard continued on to say how proud he was of his Dolphins' resiliency and ability to overcome some challenges during training over the last couple of weeks.
"These last two weeks have been a whirlwind for our team; you name it, we experienced it. But what I am so proud of is how this team can roll with the punches. If we can keep rolling with it, keep punching back, and keep our eyes set on our goals, we can represent JU at a very high level this weekend. I am so grateful to be heading into this race weekend with our staff and our athletes by my side," stated Weinard.
This weekend's regatta is set to kick off on Sunday, April 10, at 10 am with Jacksonville's first race occurring at 10:30 am when they take on Georgetown and Marietta in the 1
st Varsity 8+. They will then go on to compete in the 2
nd Varsity 8+ and the 3rd Varsity 8+ before being regrouped based on results for the afternoon races beginning at 1:30 pm. They are also slated to compete in and additional 3V8+ race at 2:20 pm against Saint Joseph's and Navy.
