JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- The Jacksonville women's rowing program put together a strong performance to kick off the racing season at the Head of the Arlington on Saturday.
"We had a fantastic day!" exclaimed head coach
Mike Lane. "Our energy was very high, the results were great and we walked away from this regatta in a really excited position as we prepare for our spring."
In the women's Varsity 8+, the Dolphins had two boats compete against others from Embry-Riddle, Stetson and FIT. Jacksonville took both first and second on the day, with JU's 1v8 finishing in first with a 19:34.5 time. The Dolphins 2v8 crossed the finish line in 19:52, which was still eight seconds ahead of the next closest boat, which was from Embry-Riddle.
Jacksonville's Novice 8+ also won its respected event over Nova Southeastern. JU finished its race with a 21:31.8 time, which was nearly 90 seconds ahead of the Novice 8+ from Nova SE.
In the Varsity 4+, Jacksonville again had three boats compete. This time, the Dolphins took second third and sixth, with first place being decided by just six-seconds. Embry Riddle's V4 took first with a 23:02.4 time, with JU's 4+ B boat taking second at 23:08.7. Jacksonville's A boat finished in 23:42.3 and their W4x crossed the finish line in 26:41.9.
"I am so proud of the hard work our women have put in this fall," further added Lane. "When things get hard, they support each other and find the way to be successful. I want to also thank coach Alex Pullium for her hard work with our novices, who found out today what it was like to race. I expect big things from that group!"
Today's race was the first edition of the Head of the Arlington, a regatta hosted by Jacksonville. It kicks off the racing season for JU, who looks to begin its defense of the last two MAAC Championships this spring.
