PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – Alexandre Vandermoten and
Daniel Montalvo both fired first round 69s to lead Jacksonville University men's golf, who sits T7 overall after the opening day of the Golfweek Fall Challenge.
The Dolphins had to overcome a three-and-a-half-hour weather delay on Sunday during the back-nine at True Blue Golf Club.
Vandermoten eased into his day, finishing his opening round strong. He was even through his first seven holes of the day, and after sinking his second birdie, a double-bogey on his ninth hole left him +1 at the turn. From there, he caught fire, birdieing two of his next four holes. After giving a stroke back on his 14th hole of the day, he ended the round after the long layoff with a par and three consecutive birdies. He had seven total birdies to lead the team.
Montalvo used a steadier approach, sitting two under through eight holes. He faltered on the Par-4 18th hole, which was his ninth of the day, double-bogeying it just like Vandermoten. He quickly bounced back with a birdie after making the turn, and had four pars and three birdies over his final eight of the day.
Filip Raza shot an opening round 70, and is -2 overall. He birdied his first and fifth holes of the day, and had one bogey and three pars in his final four of the first nine. After consecutive bogeys on his 11th and 12th holes, he ripped off three-straight birdies, followed by three consecutive pars to close the round.
Jack Neill shot a first round 74, a round featuring plenty of high-level moments marred by one tough stretch at the turn. Neill was even through his first eight holes, before a double-bogey on his ninth hole. That was immediately followed by a four-over nine on his 10th hole. He quickly flipped the script, birdieing his next hole, then a par, followed by four consecutive red numbers to get to +1. He finished the day with a par-bogey stretch. His 2-under scoring on Par-4s led the Dolphins.
Freshman
Jackson Klauk saw some ups-and-downs in his first collegiate round. He sat at -1 through his first seven of the day, before giving back four strokes over his next three holes. After a tough stretch on his 13th and 14th holes, he bounced back with two birdies and two pars to end the round. He shot 1-under on Par-3s, which was tied with his teammate Montalvo for second-best score overall on such holes.
JU was the best team in the field on Par-3s, shooting 3-under collectively, and was also 2-under total on Par-4s on Sunday as well. The team's 27 total birdies was also tied for tops in the field.
