NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Jacksonville University men's and women's cross country sent select racers to compete in the Michael Pretorius Invitational at Vaughn's Gap course on Saturday morning.
A thunderstorm rolled through the region and delayed the events, but both teams battled the elements to post solid finishes in one of the two debut races of the 2023 season. The men placed fourth overall, while the women came home fifth.
The men competed in the 8000m against eight other schools, including several Atlantic Sun Conference foes, including Central Arkansas, Lipscomb and Austin Peay. Three Dolphins finished in the top-25, led by
Thomas Hellenbrand, who, along with teammate Zach Mickler, both bested the average time in the race.
Victor Farfan was the final JU runner to cross the line inside the top-25. Other racers who competed for JU were
Jack Bolan,
Geovanni Calderon,
Noah Shedden,
Owen Skelton and
Donald Dempsey III.
"This was an exciting continuation of where the men left off last cross country season," said Head Coach
Jordon Garman. "Fourth out of eight teams in a competitive field in our first race back is great. Our top-four guys not only ran faster than planned, but also ran PRs which is always exciting.
"Geo ran the fastest 8k debut of a freshmen in a long time on a hilly course, so there is big promise with him. We had a few guys that were coming in at less than 100 percent, but I am am confident they will be where we need them in October. More work is needed but we are definitely on the right track."
The women ran the 5000m, also competing against several ASUN schools: Central Arkansas, Lipscomb and Austin Peay.
Mya Bodrato was the Dolphins best finisher, placing 12th overall. Her teammate,
Jordan Dix, was the second JU runner to finish with a time under the race average.
Madeline Weiler,
Reilly Smith and
Emma DeRosa were just behind to round out the JU contingent.
"Jordan, Madeline, and Reilly looked very strong running together. Madeline was able to get a PR today which is phenomenal on this course," said Garman. "
Emma DeRosa fell back a bit, but was able to finish strong. It was really exciting to have Mya back and healthy.
"I look forward to seeing what we are able to do with a little more time and when we have all of our pieces in play."
