Jacksonville Falls in Penalties to EKU

Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University women's soccer season ended in dramatic fashion in the first round of the ASUN Championship tournament Thursday, as the Dolphins fell 1-1, 5-4 in penalties, to Eastern Kentucky.

The JU season ended with a 4-10-4 record and a 3-6-2 record in ASUN play. In coach Ryan Moon's first season at the helm of the Dolphins, he led the team to the No. 8 seed in the ASUN tournament.

How It Happened
Jacksonville broke through first behind a Laura Di Mascio strike across the face of the EKU keeper in the 33rd minute.

With less than four minutes to play in regulation, EKU found nylon and tied the game. Regulation ended with a 1-1 score and both teams went into their first overtime of the season.

The overtime period ended scoreless and again both teams had to face the unknown as they went into penalty kicks.

Di Mascio nailed her first shot for the Dolphins, followed by makes from Andrea Zwinkels and Inés Martín. EKU made all three of its shots as well.

A miss from the Dolphins snapped the scoring streak and the Colonels capitalized, winning 5-4 in the penalty shootout. Georgina Spraggon added Jacksonville's final PK make.

During regulation, Manuela Restrepo and Di Mascio led the Dolphin contingent with two shots each. The team tallied 11 in total.

Pia Bozic had unarguably her greatest game as a Dolphin as the team's net minder, putting up 10 total saves after facing 28 shots and a dozen shots on net. Bozic's save total was a season-high and she faced a season-high in shots.

As a team, Jacksonville reached the ASUN Championship for the first time since 2022. The team's four wins were its most since the '22 season.

Game Notes
  • JU has finished regulation with a win or tie in all four games Di Mascio scored in.

  • Restrepo and Di Mascio attempted the team's only shots on goal.
  • Bozic, Samantha Sharrocks and Madelyn Radtke played the entire 110 minutes of regulation and overtime.
  • Zwinkels played 100 minutes.
