JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University men's soccer staged a furious late-game rally, scoring two goals in the final six minutes of regulation to erase a two-goal deficit and earn a thrilling 2-2 draw with FGCU at Southern Oak Stadium on Friday.
The result moves Jacksonville's record to 2-6-3 overall and 0-1-2 in ASUN play, while FGCU moves to 4-6-3 (0-2-1 ASUN).
FGCU's Salvador Martinez Romo proved difficult to contain early, scoring goals in the fourth and 61st minutes, both assisted, to give the Eagles a commanding 2-0 lead late in the second half.
The Dolphins, however, were not deterred. Senior defender Nahne Paulsen gave Jacksonville life in the 85th minute, punching in a goal at the 84:32 mark off an assist from junior defender Logan Hall to make the score 2-1.
The pressure mounted in the final moments as Jacksonville pushed for the equalizer. With time winding down, sophomore midfielder Leonardo Davi C Santos delivered the dramatic final blow, netting a game-tying goal with just 45 seconds left in the contest (89:15). Davi C Santos' unassisted strike secured the tie for the Dolphins.
Goalkeeper Christian Sekanina (2 saves) anchored the defense for the full 90 minutes.
Jacksonville outshot the Eagles 14-9 on the night, including a dominant 10-3 advantage in the second half. The Dolphins were unable to capitalize on their first-half opportunities but made their second-half chances count, putting eight shots on goal for the match.
The Dolphins return to action on Tuesday (Oct. 14) against Georgia State in non-conference play.
