FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Jacksonville University men's soccer team secured their place in the tournament field in dramatic fashion on Friday night, defeating rival Florida Gulf Coast University 2-1 after Iver Skorve delivered a game-winning goal in the 85th minute.
The victory (5-7-4, 2-2-2) was the final regular-season road contest for Jacksonville and carried the weight of a playoff elimination game, as it ensured FGCU (6-7-3, 2-3-1) could not advance and confirmed the Dolphins place in the ASUN Tournamemt.
The Dolphins started strong, finding the net early when Romain Spailier showcased his attacking form, scoring at the 11:28 mark of the first half to put Jacksonville ahead 1-0. FGCU managed to find an equalizer later in the period, with Edson Murguia scoring in the 34th minute to send the intense contest into halftime tied at 1-1.
The entire second half was a relentless, physical battle for possession. Jacksonville's goalkeeper, Christian Sekanina, delivered a vital performance, making two key saves to repel the Eagles' attack and keep the score knotted.
With the clock ticking down and the season on the line, the deadlock was finally broken. In a moment of pure clutch play, Skorve stepped up for the decisive goal at 84:56. His strike cemented the hard-fought 2-1 win and officially punched the Dolphins' ticket to the championship tournament, marking a triumphant end to the regular season on the road. Jacksonville finished the contest having outshot FGCU 13-8.
Head Coach Ali Simmons:
"An emotional win, We never stopped believing, I am so proud of the boys, we struggled with conceding late goals early on in the season, but we have now become a team that threatens for 90 minutes solid and have a never say die attitude. Fully deserved the win despite a difficult environment. Epitomized by Iver Skorve with that late goal, he was first class throughout. All you can do in the season is work hard and work together to earn another game and we did that, onto the next."
