LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Jacksonville Dolphins may need to check a few extra bags on their flight home from the ASUN Indoor Championships.
After a successful opening day Thursday, Jacksonville competed in its most events Friday where Dolphins dotted the podiums and etched their names into school, ASUN and NCAA history.
As a unit, JU finished third overall with 78 team points, finishing ahead of Queens in fourth and behind Lipscomb.
Individually, star sprinter
Cassie Thompson was named the Most Valuable Performer of the women's side. Thompson finished first in the 200m with a time of 23.54. She also helped lead the 4x400 relay team to a first-place finish and earned second place in the 60m.
Thompson has now won back-to-back Indoor MVPs. A senior, Thompson will already go down as one of the greatest track athletes to ever wear a Dolphin uniform. And right there with her is sister Cassidra.
A junior, Cassidra was integral in Jacksonville's third place finish, earning an individual gold medal herself.
Cassidra finished atop the podium in the 400m and earned third place in the 200m. She too was part of the 4x400 relay team that took home gold.
Joanna Rogers and
Kemaj Moore joined the Thompson sisters in their gold medal relay conquest. In doing so, the unit ran the
52nd fastest 4x400 time in the NCAA this year.
The squad's 4x400 time of 3:40.03 was a full two seconds faster than their season-best time. It also established a ASUN Championship record for the indoor 4x400.
The Thompson's were certainly not the only athletes to take home hardware on Day Two.
Joy Whittington, in the 60m hurdles, earned herself a bronze medal.
In the triple jump,
Sanaa Geter also took home third. The freshman Geter finished with her bronze in the triple and a fourth-place spot in the long jump.
