ORLANDO, Fla. – Down at the University of Central Florida, the Jacksonville Dolphins tackled their second outdoor track and field meet of the season.
Unsurprisingly, a Jacksonville relay team found itself on a podium by meet's end.
In the 4x100 relay on the second day of competition, the unit finished third overall and just .6 seconds behind the first-place team from Iowa.
The squad of
McKayla Francis,
Mariandree Chacon,
Cassie Thompson and
Cassidra Thompson finished with a time of 45.23.
Cassidra also had a strong day individually, earning fifth place in the 400-meter dash. Cassidra's time of 53.68 not only set a personal best for the star sprinter but was the third fastest time in school history in the event.
The 53.68 is just behind Courtney Walker's 53.57 run in 2014.
Cassie Thompson had a fine showing as well, highlighted by her 13
th place finish in the 100 and an 18
th place finish in the 200. Chacon finished right behind Cassie in the 200, ending in 19
th.
Taking to the 400 hurdles,
Julia Sue-Kam-Ling finished in 17
th. In the 400 hurdles,
Joy Whittington finished in 16
th.
The Jacksonville distance runners had a second consecutive banner showing in their respective events.
Madeline Weiler led the squad with her 11
th place finish in the 5000. Weiler earned a time of 18:06.70. Not too far behind was
Alexis Holmes in 21
st (18:36.96) and
Lana Grelli in 23
rd (18:41.67).
In the 1500,
Jordan Dix earned a time of 4:58.52 and 59
th place.
COACH'S COMMENTS
"We had a great weekend," head coach
Bambi Brundage said. "Cassidra really stepped up in the 400 today. She ran a huge personal best and move into our top-five all time. (Friday) our distance group also had an impressive showing with lots of personal bests in some exciting races. We're definitely moving in the right direction and looking forward to another solid week of training before heading into competition in two weeks."
