JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Julia Sue-Kam-Ling leaped her way to the top of the podium Friday during the second day of the ASUN Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The junior jumper finished first overall in the long jump, hitting a new personal record of 6.20 meters during her final attempt of the day. Competing with an athlete from Central Arkansas for the top spot, Sue-Kam-Ling stuck her last jump and catapulted herself to a gold medal and the fifth-best mark in Jacksonville outdoor track history. Her final mark also puts the junior in the field for NCAA regionals.
"Julia came through in classic fashion: delivering when it mattered most," head coach Bambi Brundage said. "She put it all together on her final jump at the championship, securing the win and extending her season. It was a electric moment and a phenomenal performance. We're so proud of her and excited to see what she does in two weeks."
Just outside of the podium was freshman
Sanaa Geter, who finished in fifth place with a 5.74m final jump.
Jacksonville was far from over after Sue-Kam-Ling's gold medal showing, with a trio of Dolphins qualifying for the 400 meter finals.
Cassidra Thompson and
Joanna Rogers finished second and third respectively in the 400m qualifiers, with Thompson running a 54.59 and Rogers finishing with a 55.21. In eighth place,
McKayla Francis also qualified for the finals in the 400 with a time of 56.46.
In the qualifiers for the 100m, senior
Cassie Thompson led the Dolphin contingency with a third-place finish and a time of 11.78.
Mariandree Chacon, in sixth place, qualified with a time of 11.85.
Joy Whittington qualified for Saturday's finals in the 100m hurdles, placing third with a time of 14.43, 0.08 seconds shy of her personal best.
Rounding out the day, long distance runner
Madeline Weiler finished 12
th in the 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 11:34.28, a new personal best.
"We had a great team effort today," Brundage said. "Our sprinters and jumpers had solid performances, advancing to the finals in their events and Madeline closed the night with a personal best in the steeplechase. Freshman
Sanaa Geter also earned a top-five finish, an impressive showing in her first year especially after a challenging season. Momentum is building and we're excited heading into championship day tomorrow."
During Saturday's final day of competition, Jacksonville will have student-athletes competing in the triple jump, 4x100 relay, 100m hurdles, 400m dash, 100m dash, 400m hurdles, 200m dash, 5,000 meter run and the 4x400 relay.
