US Open Preview: Grant Haefner Makes Debut at Oakmont

OAKMONT, Penn. — Former Jacksonville University men's golfer Grant Haefner is set to take on the 125th US Open at Oakmont Country Club.

Haefner, 27, rolled in a bending putt of at least 60 feet to secure medalist honors at his qualifier in Springfield, Ohio, earning not only his first appearance at a Major, but his first PGA Tour tournament.

"You make these dreams when you're younger, or you think you can do it, and when you pull it off and it's become a reality, it's hard to comprehend or put into words," Haefner told WWJ Newsradio 950 in Detroit.

"It means the world," he said. "I don't have status, missed Korn Ferry [Tour] status by a little bit in December. I'm just trying to prove to myself that I belong on this stage."

Haefner will tee it up Thursday as one of 156 players in the field at the season's third major — one of just 17 who qualified by going through both stages of qualifying. He bested local qualifying at Lochmoor Club in Grosse Pointe Woods on May 12 and final at Springfield Country Club in Ohio on June 2.
