Jacksonville Shows Out In Outdoor Season Opener At UNF

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- The Jacksonville Dolphins kept their momentum from the indoor season rolling onto the outdoor track, showing well at the UNF River City Relays across town at Hodges Stadium.

The Dolphins finished with five top-three finishes in two days of action.

Thursday started strong with Samaryah White in the long jump. She led all ASUN jumpers with a 6th-place, 5.52 meter jump to open the day. Joy Whittington carried that momentum onto the track, placing third in the 400m hurdles win 1:02.92.

In the 200m, the Dolphins had two finishers. Julia Sue-Kam-Ling placed 14th in 25.34 and Sanaa Geter placed 29th with a 27.25 time.

Jacksonville closed the opening day of action with their longest individual race of the weekend: the 1500m. The Dolphins had four finishers in the Top 20. Mya Bodrato led the way, pacing 14th in 5:02.7. Josephine Leonard was close behind, finishing one tenth of a second behind her teammate in 15th.

Leah Daniel finished in 5:18.48 for an 18th place finish, while Alexis Garza placed 19th in 5:27.53.

Geter opened Friday with JU's best finish of the weekend yet. In the triple jump, she finished second with an 11.88 meter leap. White finished eight with a 10.72 meter jump.

In the 100M Hurdles, three Jacksonville athletes qualified for the finals. Whittington won her heat with a 13.89 finish, while Karis Reese finished third in her heat with a 14.55 time. Ma'Kala Davis also qualified for the finals with a 14.75, fourth-place finish in her heat.

All three athletes finished in the Top 10 for the prelims, with Whittington posting the second-best time of the prelims. In the finals, Whittington kept her dynamic day going with a second-place, 13.77 finish.

Reese also finished in the top five, placing fourth with a time of 14.23. Davic came in seventh, posting a 15.09 time.

In the prelims for the 100M Dash, Sue-Kam-Ling finished 12th with a 12.19 time, while White placed 22nd in 12.65. Neither qualified for the final.

The Dolphins saved some of their best racing for last, showing well in both the 4x100m and 4x400m Relays.

Jacksonville's team of Kemaj Moore, Mariandree Chacon, Savannah Chadic and McKayla Francis finished second in both relays. In the 4x100, they finished in 45.65. They were nearly half a second clear of Marshall for the silver medal.

The team's second-place finish in the 4x400 was in 3:41.38, almost five seconds clear of hosts North Florida in third place.
