Chacon, Davis Earn ASUN Player Of The Week Honors

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A pair of Jacksonville track and field athletes have earned ASUN Weekly honors after a stellar showing over the weekend.

Sprinter Mariandree Chacon was named the ASUN Track Athlete of the Week while jumper Ma'Kala Davis took home ASUN Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. This is Davis' second weekly track award of the year, earning weekly indoor honors in February, and Chacon's first of the season.

Both student-athletes were ahead of the pack at the UCF Knight Invite, coming off a strong end of the indoor track season which saw Davis win Indoor Field Athlete of the Year as they both help JU to a third-place overall team finish.

Davis earned first place in the triple jump down in Orlando, leaping an impressive 12.78 meters. She then took home third place in the long jump with a final distance of 5.99m. She was the top finishing Dolphin in both events, ahead of any other ASUN competition.

As for Chacon, she helped the 4x100 relay team to a fifth-place finish with a time of 45.49. The relay team, too, was the highest placing ASUN squad.

Individually, Chacon secured ninth in the 100m dash (11.49) and 11th in the 200m (23.69). The Guatemalan Olympian was the top Dolphin in both events.

Chacon's time in the 100 planted her as the fastest ASUN runner this outdoor season in the event, ahead of the next closest runner by almost .4 seconds. In the 200, she again had the fastest time in the league after the Knight Invite, this time by almost a full second. Her squad's 4x100 time is also the fastest posted time in the Atlantic Sun.

Unsurprisingly, Davis owns the best distances overall in both the long and triple jump after her showing in Central Florida. Jacksonville as a program controls eight of the top finishes across all track and field disciplines. The next closest program has four top finishes.

Jacksonville looks to parlay its early outdoor season success into a pair of meets over the weekend. The Dolphins will travel both to the Pepsi Florida Relays, hosted by the University of Florida, and the Embry-Riddle Classic, hosted by Embry-Riddle. Both meets will be held April 3-4.

Two meets at UNF (April 10-11, May 1-2) follow before the ASUN Conference Outdoor Championship is hosted May 14-16 at UNF.
