Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University used a dominant three-set comeback, including a 12-0 start to the fourth set behind impeccable serving from freshman Kendall Murr, to down Presbyterian College, 3-1, in the 2017 Dolphin Invitational Friday evening at UNF Arena.
Sophomore Mallory Mattingly was unstoppable with her fourth double-double of the season with a season-high 20 kills and 15 digs, while senior Mackenzie Swan clinched the Dolphins' decisive third set on her second service ace of the night. Cristina Finan nearly had a double-double with nine kills and 14 digs.
"Tonight was a total team win," stated Head Coach Julie Darty. "We served tough and we were in system; this is what we have to do on a more consistent basis to have continued success. All of our attackers were efficient with the ball and Alleah [Stamatis] ran a very well balanced offense. We committed to playing solid defense, serving tough, and taking care of our side, which created confidence and energy. If we continue to get better every time we take the floor, then we are moving in the right direction."
Jacksonville hit .299 as a team during the match, including .371, .387, and .295 in the last three sets, respectively. With a 9-for-16 performance and just one error, Amarrah Cooks led the Dolphins hitting .500. Mattingly (.362) and Olga Nushtayeva (.323) also hit above .300 on the match.
Nushtayeva added three blocks, including two solo, to spark Jacksonville's defense, while Alleah Stamatis had another impressive night with 47 assists and Swan led the team with 28 digs and two service aces.
Set One
Jacksonville (5-5) was slow to start the opening set as Presbyterian (3-7) took an early 4-0 lead. Down 8-2, the Dolphins took a timeout and promptly fired off four points to come within two, 8-6. JU was able to come within one, 13-12, after back-to-back kills from Jessica Armstrong and Mattingly, but an 8-1 Blue Hose run put the set out of reach, 22-13. Jacksonville sparked a 5-1 rally late in the set with kills from Nushtayeva and Mattingly, but Presbyterian was able to hold on for a 25-18 win.
Set Two
Three points from Cooks and two from Finan continued the Dolphins' momentum as JU opened the second set with a 6-1 advantage. The Dolphin defense didn't allow more than two consecutive points from the Blue Hose until the middle of the set when kills from Presbyterian's Allie Wright and Erin Eulitz, along with a Dolphin miscue, brought PC within three, 18-15. Jacksonville used its first time out of the set and shut the door on the Blue Hose with the next seven points for a 25-15 win to even the match, 1-1.
Set Three
The third set was similar to the previous, with the Dolphins taking an early lead, but the Blue Hose showed some fight and evened the set at 8, and again at 11, before kills from Finan and Mattingly kick started a 6-1 Dolphin rally to give Jacksonville a cushy 17-12 lead. Presbyterian added a four-point rally to come within one, 19-18, but once again, JU closed out the set on a 6-1 run behind points from four different Dolphins to take the lead, 25-19.
Set Four
Murr was a rockstar during the final set, serving up 12 straight points to open the game as Nushtayeva, Finan, Mattingly, and Cooks all registered kills. The Blue Hose found three points after that, but a 9-0 run combined with stellar serving from Finan and kills from five more Dolphins gave Jacksonville a highlight-worthy 21-3 advantage. Martina Shamley added a kill and assisted in a block down the stretch for Presbyterian, but ultimately the Dolphins' team chemistry was too much to handle as Jacksonville took the match on a 25-8 set win, its largest margin of victory in a set this season.
Erin Eulitz led the Blue Hose with a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs, while Daley Gosnell led Presbyterian with 19 digs. Sierra Jones and Jacklyn Brewington posed 12 assists each.
The Dolphins return to action tomorrow when they face Austin Peay at 1 p.m., and close out the Dolphin Invitational against South Florida at 6 p.m.
