Martin, Mattingly, Wehner Record Match Highs In Weekend Finale

Box Score

FORT MYERS, Fla. – A trio of Dolphins recorded match-high performances, though the Jacksonville University volleyball team was unable to overcome ASUN Conference foe Florida Gulf Coast on the road, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Alico Arena.

Juniors Mallory Mattingly and Natalie Wehner finished the day with 15 kills and 18 digs, respectively, to lead the way for the Dolphins, while freshman Natalie Martin added 28 assists in the effort.

The Dolphins battled until set point in the opener, but a decisive pair of runs kept the set just out of reach as the Eagles took an early advantage, 25-17. Trailing four, 13-9, Jacksonville endured a 3-1 Eagle run followed by a 4-0 run down the stretch. However, the Dolphins threatened with a 3-1 run of their own to pull within 24-17 before FGCU took the set.

Jacksonville (3-20, 2-9 ASUN) carried that momentum into the second with a 3-1 run before a trio of kills from Mattingly extended the Dolphins' lead to 6-4 and forced the Eagles to call a timeout. Tied at 9-9, FGCU (17-6, 9-1 ASUN) found a 6-0 rally to steal the lead before finishing the set with the final four points for a 25-13 win.

Though the Dolphins opened the third with a powerful kill from sophomore Madison Rayam, the hosts answered back with four straight points to take a lead that it would not relinquish. Despite five of graduate student Sara Dyslin's eight kills coming in the set, the Dolphins were unable to string together more than two points as FGCU took the match, 25-13.

Rayam finished the day with three kills, while junior Morgan Dees added seven digs for Jacksonville.

The Dolphins return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 23 when they welcome North Florida to Swisher Gymnasium for part two of the River City Rumble at 7 p.m. The match will also be streamed on ESPN+.
