Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University volleyball team hit .280 or above in each of its three sets, while a trio of players tallied double-digit kills to lead the to a sweep of visiting ASUN Conference newcomer North Alabama, 3-0, Friday evening at Swisher Gymnasium.
"We played hard tonight," stated head coach Evan Muys. "It started with the way that we warmed up – we were locked in and ready to go. Having 10 days since our last match allowed us to work on some things and it was great seeing those things in action tonight."
Mallory Mattingly posted a match-high 16 kills, Sara Dyslin added 14 kills, and Hailey Devlin recorded her second double-double of the season behind 11 kills and 12 digs to lift the Dolphins to their first victory in league play this season.
The Dolphins (2-15, 1-4 ASUN) hit an astounding .406 in the opener and never looked back. Up by two, Jacksonville used a 5-0 run through the middle of the set – highlighted by kills from Devlin and Dyslin – to extend Jacksonville's lead, 17-10. Mattingly then sandwiched a pair of kills around back-to-back points from Dyslin to close out the set as the Dolphins ran away in game one, 25-17.
Fueled by a perfectly-called timeout at set point, the Dolphins rallied back with the final three points in the second game to take a 2-0 lead over the Lions (2-12, 0-5 ASUN). Jacksonville led for much of the set early on and pulled away from a 13-13 deadlock with a 5-0 run. The Lions came storming back with eight of the next nine points to steal a 21-19 advantage. Back-to-back kills from Mattingly and Hannah Marchand tied up the set before a North Alabama attack error gave the Dolphins the lead once more. UNA then took three of the next four points to bring the game to set point, 24-23, before the Dolphins' timeout curbed the Lions efforts.
A pair of decisive runs backed by elite work from the service line kept the momentum in the Dolphins' favor to close out the match. Down by three, 8-5, a kill from Mattingly brought Morgan Dees to the service line and spark a 5-0 run to gain a 10-8 advantage – one they would not relinquish the rest of the match. Though the Lions managed a 3-0 run, a kill from the hot handed Dyslin ignited Jacksonville's second streak – this time a 6-0 run behind service from Natalie Martin – to quash any doubts of a sweep with a seven-point lead, 20-13. The Dolphins went on to take four of the final six points with a pair of kills from Devlin and an ace from Dyslin for the final 25-19 win.
Martin added a career-high 41 assists to fuel the Dolphins' .336 match hitting percentage, while Marchand, Mattingly, and Devlin came down with solo blocks during the match.
