Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University volleyball battled in its ASUN Conference home opener Friday evening against Florida Gulf Coast, though an injury in the second set cut short an impressive performance as the Dolphins fell, 3-0, at Swisher Gymnasium.
Down two, 6-4, in the opening set, Jacksonville rallied with six straight points to take a 10-6 lead. The Eagles regained the lead, 14-12, midway through the game, but Jacksonville again bounced back with a 6-0 run - ignited by a clutch kill from fifth-year senior Sara Dyslin - to take a four point lead, 18-14. FGCU chipped away at the Dolphins' lead and tied the set at 21-21 before stealing four of the final five points and the opener, 25-23.
In a 6-1 deficit early on, Jacksonville found itself without its starting setter after an injury at the net. FGCU took advantage and extended its lead to 2-0 with a 25-8 set win.
Once more showing their persistence, JU battled in the third set and came within one, 12-11, but the Eagles used a late 8-0 run to put the set and match away, 25-15.
Juniors Mallory Mattingly and Natalie Wehner posted match highs in kills (11) and digs (13), respectively, while Dyslin finished the match with four kills, five digs, and a solo block. Freshman Natalie Martin recorded 14 assists after taking over for senior Lauren Petersen, who totaled seven assists.
The Dolphins return to action tomorrow evening at Swisher Gym when they take on Liberty at 6 p.m.
