PONTE VEDRA, Fla. – History was made on Monday afternoon at the Sea Best Invitational when Eduardo Carrete of the Jacksonville University men's golf team tied a tournament record by firing a -6, 64 in the second round.
The field was faced with 36 holes on the first day of the event and Carrete was game for it. The junior fired and opening round 69 to put him in contention out the gate but he followed that up with six birdies and a 29 on the front nine of round two. All of that led to the six-under score he wound up shooting at the TPC Sawgrass-Dye's Valley Course. His cumulative tally of -7, 133 through two rounds leads the field by four strokes with just 18 left to play on Tuesday morning.
Carrete, a native of El Campanario, Mexico, will be in search of the first individual title of his career when the Dolphins take the course on Tuesday. Behind Carrete will be teammates Thomas Thurloway and Michael Sakane who fired scores of +6, 146 and +8, 148, respectively to settle into ties for 39th and 47th. Further back will be Aaeri Krishnan (+17, 157) and Sam Uhland (+18, 158).
Monday's action came by way of a shotgun start but on Tuesday the field will be split between the first and tenth tees and go off in traditional starting fashion beginning at 8 a.m.
