ATLANTA, Ga. – The ASUN Conference announced its Preseason All-ASUN baseball team and preseason poll on Wednesday.
Jacksonville University baseball placed two on the preseason all-conference team, and was voted to finish fifth in the poll, as selected by the league's coaches.
Redshirt-junior pitcher
Austin Temple is one of three starting pitchers on the team. The Palm City, Fla. native is coming off of a dominant campaign in the shortened 2020 season, leading the team and ASUN Conference, while finishing 31st nationally, in Earned Run Average (0.71). He started all four of his appearances last year, and tossed 19.1 consecutive scoreless innings over the course of his last three outings. Temple set a new career-high in strikeouts in with eight vs. Austin Peay, and he never fanned fewer than seven in all four starts. He finished the season second on the team and tied for fifth in the ASUN in innings pitched, with 25.1.
Temple was also named Fan-Voted Pitcher of the Year, winning a vote conducted by the league on Facebook.
Christian Coipel, a redshirt-junior first baseman, also earned Preseason All-Conference distinctions. The Miami native returned from an injury-shortened 2019 campaign to post his best numbers as a Dolphin. He started 16 of the 17 games he played and led the team and ASUN Conference in both home runs, with five, and RBIs, with 20. He had six multi-RBI games and a six-game RBI streak from Feb. 19-28. He delivered both a go-ahead, two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to power Jacksonville to victory against #35 West Virginia and knocked in both runs, including the walk-off single, to beat VCU.
