ATHENS, Ga. – The Jacksonville University men's golf program closed out the 2021 edition of the ASUN Championship in third place overall with Michael Sakane securing a third-place finish as well on the individual leaderboard.

Jacksonville scored rounds of 280-283-287, 850 (-2), falling in behind Liberty (-20) and FGCU (-7) but ahead of the No. 18 team in the nation, North Florida finished 11 strokes back of the Dolphins. While Sakane was electric for the duration, it was Josef Hacker whose star shone brightest on Tuesday. The sophomore fired seven birdies and was the lone Dolphin to score under par for the day. He was able to climb four spots into a tie for 17th overall with a +4, 217.

Sakane battled with Van Holmgren (FGCU) and Nick Gabrelcik (UNF) for the top spot all day. Gabrelcik entered the event as the No. 2 player in the country and Holmgren checked in at No. 120 while Sakane was ranked 137. In the end, Holmgren canned a birdie on the final hole to claim the individual title. Sakane was left seeking a birdie all afternoon, and was forced to settle in two-strokes back of Holmgren.

Alexandre Vandermoten closed out his breakout week with a +2, 73 to settle in at -3, 210 and in a tie for seventh overall. Joseph Sullivan collected three more birdies to finish even-par for the day and +8 overall. He closed in a tie for 19th. Eduardo Carrete finished in a tie for 22nd at +10, 223.

The Dolphins will not await their fate as determined by the NCAA Tournament committee. The NCAA Selection Show will air on the Golf Channel on Wednesday, May 5. Jacksonville entered the week as the No. 73 team in the country.
