TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Jacksonville University's
Michael Sakane fired a final round 70 on Wednesday afternoon to finish 13-under par at the NCAA Men's Golf Tallhassee Regional, good for second place overall on the player leader board and tops among all individual competitors, granting him the opportunity to compete for a national championship next week. Sakane becomes the first Dolphin to reach this stage as an individual in program history.
After posting scores of 67 (-5) and 66 (-6) over the first two rounds, Sakane fought off three-consecutive bogeys on the back nine, picking up a pair of birdies down the stretch to close out the round at -2, 70, just one stroke back of the individual champion from Georgia. His 54-hole score of 203 is his lowest of the season and he defeated 11 competitors ranked in the top 100 in the nation, including the No. 1 player in John Pak from Florida State. He ended up leading the entire field in Par 4 scoring at 3.80 (-6) and had the most birdies (19).
Sakane now advances to the finals at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale Ariz. May 28-June 2. Michael will play three rounds of golf before the field is cut down. A fourth round will be played to determine the 2021 NCAA Men's Golf National Champion.
