Women’s Rowing Finishes Week with Solid Performance at Stetson Invitational

DELAND, FL – Jacksonville Women's Rowing had an impressive second of two back-to-back race days on Saturday, winning four of five races against both Stetson and Drake.

The Dolphins started their day off with great pace, finishing a whole 50 seconds in front of Stetson in the W2V4 with a time of 8:15.1 on the 2000-meter course. They would then follow that up with another solid victory in the W1V4, winning by just under 24 seconds to Stetson in second.

After taking third in the 1st Varsity 8, JU would then finish off the day with two more wins in both the 2nd Varsity 8 and the W3V8 with times of 7:05.7 and 7:43.2 respectively.

When asked about how he thought his team performed on Saturday, Head Coach Mike Lane was very happy with his team's pace and also hopeful in their ability to learn from some misfortune in the 1st Varsity 8 race.

"We had really solid results today! Also, our 1V was in a heck of a race before our 7-seat caught 2 boat stopping crabs, I would much prefer this to happen now than in May. So, although that was certainly a challenge for them, it just makes them that much hungrier to come back to Deland and race the heck out of Stetson next Friday!" said Lane.

Coach Lane then went on to explain how proud he was of his team's ability to overcome the fatigue of spring break training, combined with two back-to-back races with overnight travel in between.

"I could not be prouder of my team's effort this week! It was spring break and we really worked them hard, then capped it off with 2 very competitive racing opportunities. They took everything in stride and stayed positive. They just kept asking for more, and I am really excited to watch what they will accomplish this spring!" stated Lane.

Finally, while reflecting upon the weekend as a whole, Lane was pleased with how his team handled a fast opponent in UCF on Friday, and then put in a great performance vs a MAAC opponent in Stetson on Saturday.

"We learned a ton this weekend! It is always good to race a faster team in UCF, however hanging with them and beating UConn was a good confidence builder! Then to come back and re-load for today was a challenge especially coming off spring break, but that being said racing MAAC Conference foes makes it that much easier to get fired up!" added Lane.

The Dolphins will take a quick break before returning to Lake Beresford in Deland on Friday, March 25, to face off against both Stetson and Miami.
