CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA, Calif. – Josef Hacker's first round 70 helped lead Jacksonville University men's golf into T7 on the leaderboard after the first round of the Cal Poly Invitational.
Due to a frost delay that last an hour in the morning, second round action could not be completed on Monday at The Preserve Golf Club.
Hacker started his day on the Par-3 16th, and he sank a par, the first of three in a row before he collected his first birdie of the day on hole #1, a Par-4. Three more pars and another birdie followed and he was 2-under through his first nine holes of the day. He ended up giving a pair of strokes back on the back nine, but made up for it with two more birdies and was T13 after the first 18.
Filip Raza shot an even-par 72 in the first round, but his journey to it was anything but smooth. After bogeys on two of his first four holes, he seemingly settled into to make three-straight pars and then his first birdie of the day on the Par-4 5th. Another bogey two holes later turned into a stretch of four birdies in six holes, before he ended his day with a double to get back to par.
Jack Neill matched Raza's score, and both are T27 after one round. Neill bogeyed his first of the day, but concluded the rest of his first nine flawlessly, sinking a pair of birdies to go with six pars. A couple of tough holes on the back notwithstanding, he added two more birdies and five pars to conclude his first round.
Alexandre Vandermoten worked around a handful of bogeys to card a first round 73. His fifth and seventh holes were both birdies, getting him back to par and he closed his opening round with nine pars in his final 10 holes.
Daniel Montalvo made six pars on his first eight holes and sprinkled in a pair of birdies to go with five more pars in his last 10 of the day.
JU was second-best in the field in Par-4 scoring and tied for second in Par-3 scoring at 1-under and 2-over, respectively. Hacker was -2 on Par-4s to lead the way and both Raza and Neill show even on Par-3s. The Dolphins' 56 pars were third-most overall, led by Vandermoten's 13.
Second round action resumes on Tuesday morning, with the third round scheduled to begin immediately after.
