DELAND, Fla.- The Jacksonville women's rowing team completed a weekend of rowing against a plethora of teams in both Orlando and DeLand, Florida.
FRIDAY
The weekend started with Jacksonville placing third in the Varsity Eight. The Dolphins 7:14.9 time was enough to edge UConn who finished in fourth with a 7:17.9. Miami and Central Florida claimed first and second respectively.Â
After the Varsity Eights, the Dolphins' Second Varsity Eights put together a 7:24.1 time put them in a similar third place finish above UConn's Second Varsity Eight squad. Miami and UCF again took first and second respectively. The Third Varsity Eight had Jacksonville finish in fourth place.
The Varsity Fours saw Jacksonville take third again with an 8:07.4 time. The Dolphins finished nearly eight seconds ahead of the Huskies, but saw UCF and Miami take the top two spots.
The Second and Third Varsity Fours followed and had JU race two boats against UCF and Uconn. The Dolphins claimed second and fourth with the Black Knights taking first and Uconn finishing in third.Â
"We had a solid day of racing," said head coach
Mike Lane after Friday's results. "Although still not the results we wanted, we also had a lot to be proud of. Lots of fight across the board, and I could not have been more proud of the effort they put in. We learned a ton and will see UCF and Miami again in two weeks at the Sunshine State Invite."Â
SATURDAY
On Saturday the Dolphins drove an hour north to race Embry-Riddle, and MAAC opponents Stetson and Drake in the DeLand Duals.
Due to impeding weather, the schedule was compressed and the teams only raced once with all of the boats.Â
The Dolphins started the day of racing off with a victory in the Varsity Eights as JU stood ahead of Stetson, Embry-Riddle and Drake, respectively.
JU then followed suite with a first place finish in the Second Varsity Eight's as Stetson finished in second, Jacksonville B finished in third and Drake again settled in fourth.
To cap off the sweep of regatta, Jacksonville took first AND second in the Varsity Fours. The two boats finished ahead of Stetson and Drake again, respectively.
"I thought we did a nice job Friday, then having the chance to come back the next day to improve upon what we did yesterday was a really cool opportunity for us," commented
Mike Lane on his teams efforts. "The women showed up prepared and ready to race! That showed on the water winning every event we entered. Today was extra important as we faced Stetson and Drake both in our conference. Today was a great way to start our conference season!"
The Dolphins return to the water in Sarasota for the Sunshine State Invite at Nathan Benderson Park on March 31st and April 1st.
