CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Jacksonville University men's golf has two players in the top-25 after day one of the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial.
The Dolphins are in fifth overall in a field that features six teams ranked in the top-50 of the Golfstat rankings.
Joseph Sullivan, fresh off of his first career ASUN Golfer of the Week award, shot 3-under for the day, climbing 19 spots in the second round to T14. His first round started with par on 10 of his first 11 holes. Sitting at 2-over through 14, he birdied his first hole of the day on the Par-4 8th, and then scored an eagle two holes later. He finished his opening 18 with an even-par 71.
In the second round, he caught fire. He started with a birdie, and after giving a stroke back, birdied his next two in a row after that. He closed his first nine with his fourth red number of the round, parred his 10th hole and rattled off three-straight birdies, before closing his day with par on three of his last five holes. In all, he sank seven birdies in the second round for a 3-under 68.He led the team and was second-best overall in Par-4 scoring, shooting 4-under.
Alexandre Vandermoten shot an opening round 69 that featured two eagles. He birdied his fourth hole of the day and closed his first nine with the first of his eagles and a birdie back-to-back. After a bit of a slow start to the second nine, he closed a birdie and an eagle on two of his last three holes of the round. His second 18 started with a birdie and five pars on his first nine. He found his rhythm again to close, sinking two birdies and pars on all but one of the other holes of his final nine of the day. He tied with Sullivan for 5-udner scoring on Par-5s, tied for fourth overall.
James Dulin shook off a tough first round to climb 24 spots in the afternoon thanks to a 4-under 67, the best round of his career and tied with
Filip Raza for the best by a Dolphin on Monday. After eight pars and two birdies his first time through the course, he locked in. He bogeyed his first hole of the second round, but that was one of only two blemishes on the scorecard. He birdied his fourth, sixth and eighth holes, and his final seven holes of the day started with a birdie, featured an eagle and ended with four straight pars.
Daniel Montalvo made seven pars in first nine holes of the day and closed the round with three birdies and five more pars to begin with an even-par 71. He sank consecutive birdies on his seventh and eighth holes of the second round, and made 11 more pars on the day, for 23 total to lead the team.
Filip Raza carded an opening round 67, but had his second round disqualified. His first 18 started with a pair of birdies, featured 12 pars, and ended with another red number, part of five total his first time through the course.
JU was fourth-best in the field on Par-4s and fifth on Par-5s for the day, shooting 5-under and 12-under as a team, respectively. The team's four eagles were the most overall as well.
The final round starts tomorrow morning, with Dulin schedule to go off the tee first at 9:15 a.m.
