CINCINNATI – Filip Raza shot a final round 68 to finish T5 at the Bearcat Invitational on Tuesday.
Jacksonville University men's golf came home 13th overall in the event at Coldstream Country Club.
"I saw a lot of positives during the Bearcat Invitational," said Head Coach
Mike Blackburn. "
Filip Raza led the team with scores of 70-71-68 this week, which is just a snapshot of his potential. Alex and Jack had solid weeks as well, averaging under 72.
"We have until October 8 before our next competition and I look forward to getting some work in to see this group realize more of their potential."
Raza's final round began with a birdie, the first of his four on the day. After consecutive pars, he buried another on the Par-4 13th. After giving a stroke back on hole 14, he ended his first nine with three-straight pars and a birdie. He made it back-to-back when he made the turn and immediately carded another red number. Five consecutive pars followed, until one of his rare blemishes, a bogey on hole seven. The answer was swift, as he birdied the Par-5 eighth, and closed the round with his 11th par of the day. His 68 was tied for the second-lowest overall round on Tuesday and he posted his best career finish, and his first career top-five. He was the Dolphins top scorer on all three types of holes, led by his incredible -6 on Par-5s, which was tied for second in the field. He also sank a team-best 12 birdies.
Alexandre Vandermoten climbed 16 spots on the final day, shooting a 1-under 70, his best round of the week. It was a roller coaster start, featuring two bogeys and a birdie in his first four holes of the day. From there, it was seven-straight pars, and then consecutive birdies on the Par-4 third and Par-5 fourth holes. He gave a stroke back with three holes to go, and ended with two pars and a fourth birdie on his last hole of the day. His 38 total pars led the team.
Jack Neill was a big climber on the day too, moving up 15 spots after he also shot a final round 70, his lowest round of the week. He was +2 through four, steadied himself with two-straight pars, then launching into his best stretch of the day, burying three consecutive birdies on his eighth, ninth and 10th holes of the round. Six-straight pars followed, and after one more bogey, he closed the day with another par, making 11 total.
Daniel Montalvo finished with 10 pars and a birdie in his final round and
Jackson Klauk had eight pars and two birdies.
The team was most-successful on Par-5s in the event, totaling a combined -16, which was tied for the third-lowest in the field.
Next up, JU heads to Spartanburg, South Carolina for The Carolina Cup on October 8-10.
