JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- The volleyball season is back in full bloom, and with the first weekend of ASUN action in the books, the league released its first weekly honors.
Jacksonville sophomore middle blocker
Haley Yount was named the league's first Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week after a dynamic performance in the Crimson Tide Invitational, leading the Dolphins to a 2-1 record in the tournament.
Yount was a two-way dynamo for JU. She led the team in kills, recording 35 (2.9 per set) across the three matches. She set a career-high in kills against UAB in the season opener, totaling 16 in Jacksonville's five-set victory.
The most impressive part of Yount's offensive showing wasn't her volume, it was her efficiency. She hit .680 in the opening weekend, nearly 16% better than anybody else in the ASUN. Against Alabama, she averaged three kills per set at an astronomical .800 hitting percentage.
The defense was equally dominant for Yount, who controlled play at the net all weekend. Through three games, she's third in the ASUN for total blocks (18) and blocks per set (1.5). She's set the tone for Jacksonville's block, being part of 64% of JU's total blocks this season.
Bellarmine's Kylie Van Hoy and Lipscomb's Sydney Strenger rounded out the first week of awards, winning Setter and Freshman of the Week, respectively.
Yount and the Dolphins continue their season-opening road stretch with a three-game trip to Pennsylvania. Jacksonville will face Mercyhurst Friday at noon before a two-game slate at the University of Pittsburgh, culminating in a match with No. 9 Pitt Sunday at 1 p.m.
