JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After one week of competition, the Jacksonville Dolphins have been awarded with a pair of ASUN Weekly Awards,
the league announced Monday.
Freshman
Ula Omerzu was named the ASUN Player of the Week after her
game winning goal over the University of Miami, while senior defender
Millie Urquhart was named the ASUN Defensive Player of the Week for helping blank the Hurricanes last Thursday.
The awards are the first for Omerzu after just one collegiate game and the second of Urquhart's career as a Dolphin.
Jacksonville's 2-0 season opening win was the first win for the program over a Power 4 school since the year 2000, and both Omerzu and Urquhart made it possible.
In the 59
th minute, Omerzu scored on a free kick to put the 'Phins ahead 1-0, a lead they never relinquished. The Slovenian freshman also led the game in total shots (three) and shots on goal (two). Omerzu earned the start – the only JU freshman to earn a starting nod – and played 72 total minutes.
On the defensive side, Urquhart helped keep the Hurricanes off the board over the course of 90 minutes. In the second half, the Dolphins allowed just one shot and only two shots on goal total. The Scottish defender also launched one shot on goal over 69 minutes played while earning a starting nod.
Jacksonville was the only ASUN school to defeat a Power 4 school during the league's opening week and is one of just two undefeated teams remaining in the league. JU's second game of the year, an Aug. 16
th tilt at Charleston Southern, was canceled due to weather after around 17 total minutes played.
Led by the dueling ASUN weekly honorees, Jacksonville returns to action at home against Georgia Southern on Thursday, Aug. 20
th at 7 p.m. The 'Phins defeated Georgia Southern on the road last year, 4-1. The visiting Eagles carry a record of 2-0-0 with wins over ASUN constituents North Florida (2-1) and FGCU (2-0).
Thursday's game will serve as International Celebration Night, honoring the program's 14 international players and the University's robust international student population.
