MOBILE, Ala. – Joseph Sullivan posted the best individual finish in seven years at the ASUN Men's Golf Championship and Jacksonville University men's golf carded its lowest team score ever at the event, finishing third on Wednesday at the Magnolia Grove Course.
The Dolphins shot a 32-under 832, while Sullivan came home T2, making the All-Tournament Team after a final round 66, his second-straight round with that score.
"The last month or so, the guys have been really putting in the work and have gained some confidence," said Head Coach
Jamey Salmon. "It has been so much fun for [Assistant Coach] Eric [Holcomb] and I to see them grow and mature and their hard work pay off."
His two nines were nearly mirror images of each other, and the entire round was bogey free. He opened the day with consecutive pars before sinking his first two birdies on back-to-back holes. He again went low on the Par-5 sixth to get to 3-under for the day, which is where he was as he made the turn. After a stretch of five straight pars, he again birdied the Par-4 12th. He ended strong, making two straight birdies for the second time on the day on holes 15 and 16, and closing with his 11th and 12th pars of the day.
His 54-hole score of 200 was the best-ever by a JU player in a conference championship event, topping Michael Sakane's 203 in 2021, and is the second-best score overall by a Dolphin in program history. He led the team scoring 7-under on Par-4s and 9-under on Par-5s, both tied for fifth-best overall and one of only three players in the top-five in scoring on both types of holes. His 18 total birdies were also third-most overall.
"Joey played well this week. He did a great job of sticking to his process and staying patient," said Salmon. "He has made serious strides this semester in his game and maturity on the golf course. He is understanding his game more and more each week."
After a monster afternoon on Tuesday,
Daniel Montalvo backed that up with his second-straight sub-70 score, shooting a final round 69 to move up eight more spots and record a T21 finish in his first ever ASUN Championship. His front nine was steady, featuring a birdie on the Par-3 second hole, and one bogey. After making the turn even on the day, he heated up to end the round. Birdies on holes 12 and 14 occurred before giving back a stroke on the Par-4 15th. He ended the day with a par and consecutive birdies on his last two holes to finish the day with five total red numbers and shot 3-under.
His 2-under scoring on Par-3s was the tied for the best in the field for the week and he sank 38 pars to lead the team.
Filip Raza made five pars and a birdie on the front nine, and opened the back with a par and birdie on consecutive holes. From there, he rattled off four straight pars, and closed the round with two more, with his one major blemish occurring on the Par-5 16th.
Alexandre Vandermoten shot 1-under on the front nine, making two birdies and six pars, before a touch stretch of three bogeys around the turn. He bounced back with his third and final birdie and five more pars before closing the day with a bogey on the Par-4 18th.
James Dulin turned in his best round of the week, shooting a 1-under 71 to climb five spots on the last day. He shook off a bogey to start and ripped off three birdies on the front nine to make the turn 2-under. He started the back with another red number, and then made par on six of his final eight holes of the day.
JU's team score was 13 strokes better than the previous low at a conference championship, recorded back in 2006, the last year the Dolphins took home the team title. They scored second-lowest on Par-3s for the week, shooting even-par, and made the third-most birdies, with 64.
