JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After a rousing week of Jacksonville women's soccer, featuring a
shutout win over South Carolina State and a
comeback win over UNF,
Layla Garcia-Moreno has been honored with ASUN Player of the Week status.
The league announced the award Monday, honoring Garcia-Moreno for her two-goal effort against the Bulldogs and for scoring the game-winner against the Ospreys.
Wednesday, Jacksonville traveled up to South Carolina State for the Dolphins' final non-conference game of the season. There, Garcia-Moreno notched a brace and singlehandedly outscored the home team during her squad's third straight shutout win.
At UNF, in the 86
th minute, Garcia-Moreno was able to help push the ball past the Osprey keeper for the go-ahead winner against JU's crosstown rivals. By attacking the back of the net with her whole body, the graduate transfer was able to bolster just enough momentum while hurdling over the UNF keeper to direct the ball in for a score.
Prior to this week of competition, the Mexican-national had scored just one goal. Now, she sits tied for third on the team with four.
Two other Dolphins have been awarded with Player of the Week status so far, with
Manuela Restrepo earning the honor during the first week of competition and
Alicia Rey Perez earning the distinction last week.
Jacksonville (6-3-1, 3-0) remains on the road this week with conference stops at FGCU on Thursday, Oct. 2 and at Stetson on Sunday, Oct. 5. Kickoff against the Eagles is set for 7 p.m. while Sunday's game will be played at 1 p.m. Thursday's game will be streamed on ESPN+.
