Gene Mendes was a star pitcher for the Dolphins from 1969-70. Mendes threw 18 complete games on his way to winning 20 games during that span for a .769 winning percentage. At that time, he was the winningest pitcher in Dolphin history, with only two seasons under his belt. After pitching a one-hitter against Georgia State, Mendes tossed the second no-hitter in Dolphins history against Atlanta Baptist (5/1/70) in his next outing. He is still the all-time JU career pitching leader with a 1.29 ERA and his eight shutouts and still atop the Dolphin all-time list. Mendes recorded a school-record five shutouts with a 0.72 ERA in 1969. Additionally, he was selected by the New York Mets in the 1970 major league draft following his stellar career as a Dolphin.
