Richard Katz was a member of the JU’s baseball team from 1971-74. In his four-year career, Katz hit .375, the fifth-best average in the school’s history at the time of his induction, and earned rankings on the Dolphins’ hits, RBI, walks, home runs, and total bases lists.
Katz earned All-American honors in 1973 when he hit .396 and eight home runs, while leading the nation in RBI with 67. His consistent stroke at the plate enabled him to lead the Dolphins in hitting his final three seasons, never recording an average below .383. He was the first player in JU history to lead the team in hitting in three consecutive seasons (1972, 1973, and 1974). As a senior, Katz led the squad in every major offensive statistical category.
At his time of departure from JU, Katz was ranked on most of the career offensive categories. He was first all time in hits (226), RBIs (169), and total bases (343) and was second in walks (115) and home runs (29). At the time of his induction, Katz still figured prominently in the history of JU baseball over 30 years after his career ended.
Katz also coached JU baseball alum and fellow Dolphin Hall of Fame recipient Erine Carr in high school.
