A New England native, Dunbar began his broadcasting career for WFGA TV 12 in the late 1950s. Dunbar was the voice of the Dolphins though the school’s men’s basketball glory years.

Dunbar called JU play-by-play for both WPDQ and WMBR radio in the late 1960s and early 1970s. On WPDQ, Dunbar also had the responsibilities of doing the pre- and post-game reports.

A winner of numerous awards, Dunbar has twice been named the Florida Sportscaster of the Year. He also won the Best Daily Sports Show honor eight times in his storied broadcasting career. He earned individual recognition awards from organizations such as the Daytona Speedway. For a time, the Sports and Entertainment Commission awarded the Walt Dunbar Award for excellence in broadcasting.
