The founder of women’s athletic programs at Jacksonville University and the first varsity coach of the Dolphins’ volleyball program, Peggy Phillips was a pillar in the JU Department of Athletics until 1984. At the time of her induction, she was JU’s all-time winningest coach with a 275-176 record as the volleyball mentor, and her career winning percentage of .601 ranked 7th among all coaches.

Among her many accomplishments, she led the team to the AIAW Tournament in 1981 and the NCAA Final Eight in 1983. The 1983 squad compiled a school-record 35 wins under her direction. Phillips also led the 1978 team to a 21-match win streak, the longest such streak in the history of the school. Moreover, Phillips was honored in her final two seasons as a volleyball coach by being named the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year.

Additionally, she was active in the formation of the softball and women’s tennis squads. In 1967, Phillips coached her team to the championship game of the state tournament.
